Synopsis
Tourism 101 introduces readers to the multifaceted world of tourism as a global phenomenon that extends far beyond leisure travel. Beginning with definitions from the UNWTO, it highlights tourism’s economic, social, and cultural dimensions while explaining the tourist cycle of pre-trip, on-trip, and post-trip experiences. The book explores the scope of tourism through geography, sociology, business, and environmental science, showing how spatial patterns, cultural interactions, marketing strategies, and sustainability efforts shape destinations. It also distinguishes between domestic, inbound, and outbound tourism, emphasizing their respective roles in national and global development.
The text then examines foundational tourism theories such as Push–Pull Motivation, Plog’s Psychocentric–Allocentric Spectrum, and Butler’s Tourism Area Life Cycle, offering tools to understand traveler behavior and destination evolution. Later chapters cover types of destinations, the 5A framework (Attractions, Accessibility, Amenities, Ancillary Services, and Active Packages), supply and demand dynamics, and the tourism supply chain. Concluding with emerging trends, for example, sustainable tourism, ecotourism, and digital transformation, the book provides students and practitioners with a comprehensive guide to navigating the challenges and opportunities of modern tourism.
